Located at a distance of 32 km from Jaipur, on the Jaipur-Ajmer Road, lies a small village called Bagru. This village town has a popular fort which is normally open for public during the Gangaur Festival. Most famous for its typical wooden block printing with mud resist technique, Bagru prints are acclaimed all over India.

Chippa Mohalla (printer’s quarter) is the area where textile printers live. The three-centuries-old tradition of block printing is kept alive with the efforts of Bagru artisans

The artisans smear the cloth with Fuller’s earth (Multani mitti) from the riverside, which is then dipped in turmeric water to get the characteristic cream colour background. The cloth is then stamped with beautiful designs using natural dyes

Even today, artisans use vegetable printing dyes for printing on cloth. Blues from Indigo, greens using a mix of indigo and pomegranate, red from madder root and yellow from turmeric

The unique method of printing employs wooden blocks. The design is engraved on the wooden block first and then the carved block is dipped in colour for printing
