Here are some cool facts about cotton that we bet you didn’t know –

The name cotton comes from the Arabic word “Qutn,” which means fancy. Cotton was also once known as vegetable wool!

The first light bulb manufactured by Thomas Edison in the late 1800s used a cotton thread filament

Cotton can absorb up to 27 times its own weight in water

Tiny cotton seeds are a lot more durable than you think. They can actually survive even if they are blown across the ocean, which means they can travel for thousands of miles and still remain viable.

Cotton belongs to the Gossypium genus of plants. This makes it a relative of other popular plants like hibiscus, okra!

Cotton has been cultivated for over 5,000 years across the world (including in India). Despite the geographic divide between cotton farmers, the crop has been cleaned, prepared, spun and weaved in the same manner everywhere

As well all know, jeans are made of blended cotton. The term “Jean” is a French name that comes from sailors of Genoa, who wore the cloth. These sailors were called “genes!”
